Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all others that have been tried, according to Winston Churchill.
Even our lawmaker’s most noble efforts can create confusion and unintended consequences. Nowhere is this dynamic more evident than in tax law, and that’s why you need a trusted guide to interpret the landscape for you.
That guide is Tim Varner, who will be presenting a 2023 Tax Update at the Hunt, our annual user conference, Nov. 14-17, in Greenville, South Carolina. Varner’s general session presentation is at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.
“I’m going to discuss the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and how things look a year later,” he said. “Also, I’m going to talk about the Secure Act. 2.0, which clarifies some of the issues that came out of the original Secure Act.”
Tim is an operations manager for Wolters Kluwer, where he currently leads the CCH Trust Outsourcing team. Before joining Wolters Kluwer, Tim was a tax manager at PNC Bank, where he led a team of fiduciary tax professionals in preparation of a variety of fiduciary tax returns. He has extensive knowledge in the areas of personal taxation, IRAs, charitable, agencies, and trusts.
The Inflation Reduction Act authorized new spending for enhanced tax enforcement, including the hiring of new agents and the investment in new technologies.
“The modernizing could lead to increased auditing,” Tim said. “With all that, though, it’s supposed to improve the taxpayer experience. So, this should be of interest to banks and trust companies.”
Congress signed The Secure Act 2.0 into law in December 2022, mostly to improve retirement outcomes for millions of Americans, and also to clarify confusion from the original Secure Act from 2019.
Regarding the Secure Act 2.0, Tim will talk about 529-to-Roth IRA conversions, catch-up IRA contributions, and changes to RMDs.
